Situated just beyond the borders of the expansive Willamette Valley lies Freedom Hill Vineyard, nestled within the newly established Mount Pisgah, Polk County appellation. Originally established in 1982, the vineyard initially boasted Pinot Noir vines rooted directly into the soil, yet succumbed to phylloxera necessitating replanting on rootstock during the 1990s. Presently, the vineyard spans approximately 93 acres, with a mere 14 acres dedicated to Chardonnay cultivation.
In 2014, Walter Scott introduced the first single-vineyard bottling of Freedom Hill Chardonnay, sourced from a petite 0.83-acre parcel of California sprawl vines. Presently, Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon procure grapes from roughly six acres of Chardonnay vines within the vineyard. This includes 1.83 acres of California sprawl vines planted in 1995 and 4.22 acres of VSP-trained vines established in 2009. Reflecting on the significance of Freedom Hill Vineyard, Pahlow notes, "This vineyard, more than any other, represents where we've been and where we've come from."
